According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida has now surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants, the most of any state. South Florida leads the state in confirmed cases.
According to WPLG Local 10 News, the CDC shows 1,040 cases of the U.K. variant and 21 cases of the Brazilian variant as per the latest numbers. As of Saturday, the state has had more than 2 million COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.
Broward leads South Florida with 307 confirmed variant cases as of March 17, followed by Miami-Dade with 129 and Palm Beach County.
Local residents fear another wave of COVID-19 as visitors descend upon some of the state’s more popular tourist destinations during the spring break season. Pictures show crowds full of people with no masks on and no social distancing taking place. Crowds in Miami Beach caused the mayor to declare a state of emergency and implement a curfew.
And it’s not just the risk to Florida residents. Spring breakers could potentially travel back home with the virus and infect their household members and also the greater community.
