A Florida man died after he broke away from an officer and jumped into a bay while in handcuffs, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Donnie, 33, had been arrested in Treasure Island, near Tampa Bay, after reports of a domestic disturbance. Deputies say he was facing charges of domestic battery, obstruction, felony driving with a suspended or revoked license and a probation violation. He was taken to the Treasure Island Police Department to await transfer to another facility.
The sheriff’s office said that while Donnie was being escorted to a transport van in handcuffs, he broke free, ran toward the waters of the bay and jumped in. Emergency crews pulled him from the water and gave him first aid, but he later died at a local hospital.
Officials said the death does not appear to be suspicious. An autopsy has been scheduled and an investigation is underway.
