Ryan Garcia claims Floyd Mayweather has agreed to come out of retirement for a professional boxing match that would put Garcia’s WBC welterweight championship and Mayweather’s undefeated record on the line.
The proposed Floyd Mayweather fight would take place at 147 pounds, according to Garcia, who announced the alleged agreement on October 21, 2026. However, despite Garcia’s public statements, the matchup has not been officially scheduled.
Garcia shared the news on social media, revealing that he initially questioned whether Mayweather was serious about returning to professional competition.
“Trust me at first I thought this was bull***,” Garcia wrote on social media. “But it’s real. Floyd and I agree to a fight 147 for the WBC welterweight championship of the world. 50-0 vs The current champ.”

The 28-year-old boxer also posted a screenshot showing what appeared to be a FaceTime conversation with Mayweather. He later expanded on their discussion in an Instagram post, insisting that both fighters had reached an understanding.
“Just got off the phone with (Mayweather),” he said. “Talking about fighting – it’s real, and he wants to do a real fight 147. He and I both agreed to post this! Let’s Rumble. This will be for the 147 WBC world championship, I made that very clear, and Floyd and I agreed to fight.”
Despite Garcia’s confidence, the situation remains uncertain.
According to Uncrowned’s Darshan Desai, sources familiar with the situation indicated that no serious negotiations had taken place as of October 21.
Mayweather has also not publicly confirmed Garcia’s announcement. No official fight date, venue, broadcast partner, or signed contract has been announced.
The possibility of a Floyd Mayweather fight first gained traction in early October after boxing outlet FightHype reported discussions surrounding a potential matchup.
Garcia responded by making one condition clear. He had no interest in participating in an exhibition that would protect Mayweather’s professional record.
“And no I wouldn’t do an exhibition I want his 0 on the[expletive] line,” he wrote on social media. “How much does he actually think he got left. I’m ready Floyd, remember you made this call. I’m just returning the favor. Offer is on the table. Accept or not, if not I move foward as I have been.”
That demand would separate the proposed showdown from Mayweather’s previous appearances since retiring from professional boxing.
Exhibition matches generally do not count toward a fighter’s official professional record. A sanctioned contest, however, would mean Mayweather could potentially suffer the first professional defeat of his career.
Mayweather, 49, retired with a perfect 50-0 record, including 27 knockouts. His final professional appearance came in August 2017, when he defeated former UFC champion Conor McGregor by a tenth-round stoppage.
Since then, Mayweather has participated in several exhibitions, including a high-profile matchup against Logan Paul in 2021.
A professional comeback against Garcia would mark a significant change from those appearances, particularly because Garcia currently holds a world championship.
There is also the question of whether the WBC would approve the Floyd Mayweather fight as an official title defense.
According to FightBook MMA, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman expressed conditional support for the matchup during an interview with Hard Rock Bet.
Sulaiman indicated that Mayweather would need to undergo the appropriate medical examinations and obtain a boxing license from the commission overseeing the event before receiving the organization’s support.
His comments did not constitute official approval of the proposed championship fight.
Garcia, meanwhile, has strengthened his position in the welterweight division following two significant victories in 2026.
According to the World Boxing Council, Garcia captured the WBC welterweight championship in February after defeating Mario Barrios by unanimous decision in Las Vegas.
Garcia controlled much of the twelve-round contest, using his hand speed and accurate punching to secure a convincing victory on all three judges’ scorecards.
The championship win represented a major milestone for Garcia, who had previously experienced setbacks while pursuing a world title.
His momentum continued in September when he faced Conor Benn.
According to UFC’s official fight results, Garcia successfully defended his championship with a second-round technical knockout victory at T-Mobile Arena.
Garcia dropped Benn with a right hand before following up with additional punches that prompted the referee to stop the contest at 1:25 of the second round.
The victory improved Garcia’s professional record to 26-2 with 21 knockouts.
A Floyd Mayweather fight would present an entirely different challenge from Garcia’s recent opponents.
The two boxers are separated by 21 years in age, with Garcia competing during an active championship run while Mayweather has spent nearly a decade away from sanctioned professional competition.
Mayweather built his career around exceptional defense, timing, counterpunching, and ring intelligence. Garcia is recognized for his explosive hand speed and powerful left hook.
Their contrasting styles could make the proposed matchup intriguing, although Mayweather’s extended absence from professional boxing creates uncertainty about how he would perform against an active champion.
The relationship between the fighters also adds another layer to the potential showdown.
In January 2024, TMZ Sports reported that Garcia publicly defended his friendship with Mayweather and described the undefeated boxing legend as a mentor.
Their previous association makes Garcia’s current pursuit of Mayweather’s unbeaten record an unusual development.
The proposed fight also comes amid other questions surrounding Mayweather’s boxing plans.
According to The Ring, Mayweather had been scheduled to return for a professional rematch against Manny Pacquiao in September 2026. However, the event was postponed indefinitely amid legal and contractual disputes involving Mayweather’s camp.
Those complications could influence whether another major fight involving Mayweather can move forward.
For Garcia, pursuing Mayweather could also affect potential championship matchups against other active welterweight contenders.
Uncrowned has reported that Garcia has been linked to a possible title unification fight against Teofimo Lopez, presenting another significant opportunity within the division.
A meeting with Mayweather would carry different stakes, with Garcia seeking to defend his championship against one of boxing’s most accomplished undefeated fighters.
If the proposed Floyd Mayweather fight becomes official, Mayweather would be attempting to capture another world championship at 49 while risking the professional record he maintained throughout his career.
For now, Garcia’s announcement remains a claim of a verbal agreement, with Mayweather’s public confirmation, contractual terms, regulatory approval, and an official fight date still outstanding.
