Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones is the subject of a police report that alleges he tried to hire a hit man to kill his agent, according to TMZ Sports, which reported the story on June 18, 2014. Jones strongly denies the claim.
TMZ reported that, according to the police report, a 47 year old man named Theodore told Cleveland police that Jones approached him about taking out Jones’ agent. Theodore said he refused, and that Jones responded by saying he was a “gangster” and would make Theodore “disappear.” Theodore told police he is afraid and fears for his safety.
Jones, who is also 47, has not been arrested or charged with a crime, TMZ said. The outlet reported it reached out to Jones several times before publishing.
Jones later responded, as reported by outlets including the International Business Times. He says the man who made the claim is a distant relative who filed a false police report, and that the relative has recently been trying to extort money from him and his family. Jones says he and his agent have a wonderful relationship, that he never considered hiring a hit man, and that he plans to take legal action.
Cleveland police are handling the investigation. An allegation in a police report is not a finding of wrongdoing, and Jones is presumed innocent.
