Former NBA player Joe Smith says $109,000 in checks were written from his account without his knowledge, and that they were cashed by a man who says he got them from his ex girlfriend, Love & Hip Hop Hollywood star Moniece Slaughter. Slaughter says Smith signed the checks himself. TMZ reported the story.
According to TMZ, Smith says nine checks were written from his checkbook between October 2011 and March 2012 to a man named Timothy. Smith says he did not write them and does not know Timothy. He reported the matter to police in California.
Police reportedly located Timothy in June 2012. He told officers he was a friend of Slaughter and cashed the checks as a favor because she did not have a bank account. He said he did not know anything was wrong until Smith canceled the last check. He also said Slaughter agreed to repay him for the canceled check but then did not show up to meet him.
Slaughter’s side is also in the police report. She told officers that Smith knew about the checks and signed them himself, and that he canceled the last one only after the two broke up. When police relayed her account to Smith, he dismissed it.
Smith says he wants to press charges and is frustrated that nothing has happened in nearly two and a half years. Police told TMZ that the case remains open and active.
