Former Washington Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot was found not guilty on Monday of misdemeanor domestic simple assault. The charge was filed in November after an altercation with his girlfriend, Valerie, according to NBC Washington and Sports Illustrated.
The judge called the case “he said, she said” and said there was not enough corroboration to convict. Valerie testified that she was injured and that Smoot ripped her shorts. She also provided photos, but the judge did not find the evidence sufficient.
Smoot testified that he kicked in a bathroom door but never hit her, and he has said he has never hit a woman. He has said Valerie was the aggressor and that the relationship was ending.
While the case was pending, Smoot was suspended from his work as a contributor on Comcast SportsNet and 106.7 The Fan. He says he looks forward to returning to work.
