Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s Death Sparked A Grim Celebration On Social Media

Henry Kissinger supporters and loved ones may be mourning his death at age 100, but some of social media has much harsher things to say about the former U.S. Secretary of State.

Kissinger passed away at age 100 at his Connecticut home. During his reign, Kissinger was credited for several moves, such as his role in ending the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War, per CNN. This earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. However, the high-ranking national security advisor has also been criticized heavily for his contributions to bloodshed in various countries.

In one of his most controversial moves, Kissinger helped orchestrate the massive bombing of Cambodia from 1969 to 1973 while under President Richard Nixon. At the time, the U.S. claimed the areas being bombed were those run by communist rebels. However, Sophal Ear, a Cambodian-American political scientist, told the Washington Post Cambodians “still pay the price” for the carpet bombings. It’s estimated that thousands of Cambodians were brutally murdered. For this reason, much of social media has commenced to dragging and even celebrating Kissinger’s death. One Twitter account with the username @DidKissingerD1e has been monitoring Kissinger’s life since 2021 and frequently posted “No” to signify that he had not yet died. However, once the news broke that Kissinger was indeed dead after reaching the triple digits, @DidKissingerD1e wrote “YES.” This only opened the floodgates for other users to express their joy.

While death is certainly no laughing matter, Kissinger’s muddied political career has certainly channeled many emotions across the net.
