The #MeToo movement was a message that founder Tarana Burke started back in 2006, but as of late, it has started to carry a voice of its own.

Actresses, musicians, and other activists have voiced the stories of their #MeToo experience and of course, this has caused some controversy around the motives of the movement.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Burke sat down with Variety and discussed her initiatives for making sure people understand the true message behind the movement.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

She explained that she is focused on making the most of the movement’s spotlight and Hollywood resources to help sexual survivors. She has been raising funds to create a global community online and offline that will help guide survivors of sexual violence.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Tarana Burke also had this to say,

“In the first 24 hours of #MeToo going viral, just on Facebook, there were 12 million engaged with the hashtag… If in this country, we had an outbreak of some communicable disease that 12 million people got in a 24-hour time period, we would be focused solely on the cure. That’s the difference in how people think about the disease of sexual violence.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Burke is looking forward to bringing the rest of her vision to life and empower more women to be victorious over their experience of sexual violence.
