Jackson’s family announced the news Tuesday through his official Instagram account, saying the beloved singer died Monday night. A cause of death was not disclosed.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night,” the family wrote.

The statement remembered Jackson as more than the powerhouse vocalist whose romantic records helped define an era of R&B. His family described him as “a kind, generous soul” who deeply loved his fans, relatives, friends, and music.

“For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories,” the family said. “That gift will live on forever.”

According to Jackson’s official biography, he was born October 2, 1956, in Harlem and began singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church. It was there that he met Paul Laurence, who would become a producer and songwriting collaborator during Jackson’s rise in music.

After performing on the New York club circuit and singing lead with the R&B group Mystic Merlin, Jackson eventually signed with Capitol Records and released his debut album, “Rock Me Tonight,” in 1985.

That project quickly established Freddie Jackson as one of the defining voices of the quiet storm era. AllMusic reports that the title track, “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” spent six weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart. “You Are My Lady” followed as another R&B chart topper and became Jackson’s highest charting pop single, reaching No. 13.

His success continued with records including “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love” and his duet with Melba Moore, “A Little Bit More.” According to AllMusic, Jackson’s first two studio albums, Rock Me Tonight and Just Like the First Time, both achieved platinum status.

For generations of R&B listeners, however, Freddie Jackson’s impact went beyond numbers. His smooth delivery, unmistakable vibrato, and deeply romantic catalog made his voice a fixture at weddings, family gatherings, slow jams, and late-night radio.

His family acknowledged that connection directly in its statement, thanking everyone who ever “sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage.”

“You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always,” the statement continued.

The family said details about arrangements and ways to honor Freddie Jackson’s legacy will be announced in the coming days.

“Rest in peace, Freddie,” his family wrote. “Your legacy and your voice will live on forever.”
