Gabrielle Union has opened up about her first marriage to former football player Chris Howard.
The Being Mary Jane actress appeared on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast on Monday, and the actress admitted that her first marriage was “just dysfunctional from day one.”
She admits she was not faithful in that marriage, and neither was Howard.
“In our first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she said.
Union continued, “A part of it was like keeping up with his activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one,’ and I just felt entitled to it as well. I was paying all the bills, I was working my a– off, and I felt like that’s what comes, the spoils of riches.”

She then attributed infidelity to how her dad broke down things, “Like my dad before me, whoever has the most gets to do whatever the hell they want is what I thought,” she added. “It was just dysfunctional from day one.”
Union and Howard met at a party in 1999 in Florida and wed in 2001. Though the two didn’t separate until four years later, in 2005.
The L.A.’s Finest actor says they should have never moved out of the dating phase and got married.
Even the therapist asked how Union and Howard made it past the dating stage, “And [she said] we should probably look for a way to amicably dissolve… because you have not one thing in common, no morals, no value,” Union said.
Union is now married to ex-NBA player Dwyane Wade, with whom she shares a 4-year-old daughter, Kaavia. She is also stepmother to Wade’s three children from previous relationships.
