NBC put some action into developing “Black Girl Magic”, a half-hour single-camera comedy, from co-creators Emebeit Beyene, Crystal Boyd, Chandra Russell, Gabrielle Union and Robia Rashid.
According to Deadline “Black Girl Magic” will tell the story of three estranged sisters who learn a mysterious secret about their family history that changes their lives and brings them back to the magical world of New Orleans.
Beyene, Boyd, and Russell will executive produce the project as a team. Union will executive produce under her I’ll Have Another production banner with the company’s Holly Shakoor Fleischer as co-executive producer. Rashid will also executive produce along with Bryan Brucks. Sony Pictures Television will be backing “Black Girl Magic,” which both Union and Rashid have deals signed and developed.
“Black Girl Magic” stems from the writing team of Beyene, Boyd, and Russell, who have already appeared on the Comedy Central series “South Side,” with Russell as a writer for that series. The three previously collaborated on the series “Downtown Girls” in 2013 according to Variety.
Union is repped by CAA, Atlas Entertainment and Felker Toczek Gelman Suddleson. Rashid is the creator and showrunner of the award-winning series Atypical which will launch its third season this fall on Netflix. She is repped by ICM Partners and Sloane, Offer, Weber, and Dern according to the reports.
Beyene, Boyd, and Russell are repped by Paradigm, Kronicle Media and attorney Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
