Atlanta Influencer Shawty Dred Allegedly Ran Up $4M in Stolen Food Stamps While Showing Off Luxury Cars and Calling Folks Broke

Atlanta influencer Shawty Dred is facing 63 federal charges after prosecutors accused him of stealing approximately $4 million in food stamp benefits through hundreds of fraudulent accounts.

The 39-year-old social media personality, whose real name is Mercedes Reshard New, was indicted on October 7, 2026, and arrested in Las Vegas on October 13. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, investigators believe he operated the scheme between January 2020 and July 2026.

The indictment includes 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud, and one count of illegal transactions with access devices.

Federal authorities allege New controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts established using stolen identities. Investigators say he arranged for electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards associated with those accounts to be delivered to multiple addresses throughout metro Atlanta.

SNAP provides monthly food assistance to qualifying households. In Georgia, the Division of Family & Children Services administers the program and issues benefits through EBT cards that recipients can use at approved retailers.

Prosecutors claim New exploited both sides of that system.

After allegedly obtaining cards tied to fraudulent accounts, New registered his company, Shawty Dred LLC, as an authorized SNAP retailer. That approval allowed the business to process EBT transactions using a payment terminal.

Between April 2024 and November 2025, prosecutors allege he used fraudulently obtained cards and a payment device connected to his company to divert more than $660,000 in food assistance benefits.

Additional information released by the Department of Justice explains how investigators began connecting the activity to New.

In 2025, the Georgia Department of Human Services Office of Inspector General detected suspicious activity involving the automated telephone system used by SNAP recipients.

Investigators determined that phone numbers associated with New had contacted the system more than 9,000 times, accessing over 350 different SNAP accounts.

State investigators initially identified approximately $1.8 million in transactions involving cards connected to New. About $635,000 of those transactions were traced to Shawty Dred LLC.

The investigation eventually connected more than 500 Georgia EBT cards to him, according to the Justice Department.

Authorities had already taken action against his business before the federal indictment.

In November 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture revoked the company’s authorization to accept SNAP payments. Approximately two weeks later, East Point police arrested New at a Walmart after he allegedly attempted to sell EBT cards to customers.

Officers confiscated 14 cards issued in other people’s names. Investigators linked those cards to hundreds of calls made to the SNAP telephone system.

Despite the seizure, prosecutors allege New arranged for replacement EBT cards to be mailed to his business and other Atlanta addresses.

Federal authorities say the operation caused Georgia’s Division of Family & Children Services to deposit approximately $4.6 million into fraudulent benefit accounts, with roughly $4 million ultimately siphoned from the program. A separate Justice Department summary estimates the fraud loss at $4.4 million.

While investigators were tracking the alleged transactions, New was displaying an expensive lifestyle to his millions of social media followers.

His Instagram account, @richlifeshawtydred, has more than 2 million followers. Federal prosecutors highlighted posts showing him aboard private jets, posing alongside Rolls-Royce and Maybach vehicles, handling large amounts of cash, and mocking people he described as broke.

Authorities allege the stolen benefits helped finance that lifestyle, although prosecutors have not publicly established which specific luxury purchases were made using fraudulent funds.

“Instead of this money feeding families in need, New allegedly used the cash to bankroll a life of luxury,” FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Marlo Graham said.

Before the federal indictment, Shawty Dred had spent years building his online celebrity through Atlanta’s entertainment scene.

Born Mercedes Reshard New in Atlanta, he became known primarily for comedic Instagram skits, music, and an outspoken personality built around money and success. A June 2021 profile published by HipHopSince1987 identified him by the nickname “#TheSkitGod” and described his earlier connection to late Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo.

His association with Shawty Lo placed him within Atlanta’s hip hop orbit, but his own recognition developed through social media comedy. His exaggerated skits and larger-than-life online persona helped establish an audience beyond his music.

New also pursued a rap career. He said in an interview that acting was his ultimate career ambition, with hopes of eventually commanding multimillion-dollar movie salaries similar to established Hollywood stars.

New was also publicly promoting his business ambitions during the period prosecutors now identify as part of the alleged fraud operation. New claimed he had earned money from Instagram and was investing in restaurant ventures across Atlanta.

He discussed expanding brands including Shawty Dred LLC and “HEYYY PARTNAAA,” while outlining plans for three restaurants and a strip club.

Prosecutors have not disclosed how the identities used to establish the fraudulent SNAP accounts were originally obtained. They also have not announced whether any of the vehicles or other luxury assets featured on his social media accounts have been seized.
