A Georgia district attorney pleaded guilty to several charges, including bribing and influencing witnesses.
The former district attorney for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, Mark Jones, has agreed to resign from his position after it was found that he performed illegal practices during his time as a D.A.
“By abusing his power and abdicating his responsibility as district attorney, Mark Jones did a disservice to those he was elected to protect and put our very justice system at risk,” Attorney General Chris Carr said in a news release obtained by AP, Newsweek reports. “This outcome is a victory for integrity in prosecutions and the rule of law.”
He’s been ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, and he will serve one year in prison and four years of probation as part of his plea deal. He must also step down from his position; he’s submitted his resignation letter to Governor Brian Kemp.
Newsweek and AP report Jones was found guilty after he was accused of trying to influence a police officer’s and crime victim’s testimony. He is reported to have also been in bribes that were offered to prosecutors.
