In Gainesville, Georgia, a mother is facing murder charges after, investigators say, she brutally stabbed her 5- and 6-year-old children to death before turning the knife on herself.
According to CNN, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office called the incident “heartbreaking” and charged 26-year-old Berenice Jaramillo-Hernandez with two counts each of felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault.
Officers initially received a 911 call on Friday afternoon about a woman who had cut herself. When they arrived, deputies found the injured woman in the home with the bodies of two children, Mateo Miranda Jaramillo, 5, and Katherine Miranda Jaramillo, 6.
The preliminary investigation is still underway but does indicate that “Jaramillo-Hernandez killed the children with a knife and then turned the knife on herself, resulting in serious injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.
