Boxing star Gervonta Davis is opening up about the February assault that left his ex-girlfriend and mother of his daughter injured back on February 1st during a celebrity basketball game in Miami.
“I was just mad,” Davis admitted during an interview with Brian Custer for the Last Stand Podcast. He claimed that the incident stemmed from him being angry that she was attending the event. “And, once I seen her, it’s not [like] I grabbed her by her neck, I grabbed her shirt, like, you gotta get outta here type thing. And, I probably was wrong for doing that. I WAS wrong for doing that. But, it wasn’t so much of not me trying to hit her, it was just me angry.”
The 25-year-old WBA lightweight champion was captured on film grabbing Andretta Smothers and aggressively forcing her away from her courtside seat. TMZ obtained another angle of the incident, which appears to show Davis throwing a punch at Smothers once inside the locker room area. Davis was arrested and charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery. He pleaded not guilty. Smothers suffered injuries to her lip and left jaw.
However, Davis is adamant that he did not actually strike Smothers but just roughed her up despite her injuries.
“I’m a fighter. If I touch you in any kind of way, like as far as fists, I’mma hurt you. So it wasn’t that. It was just me removing her from that situation that she wasn’t supposed to be in.”
To right his wrongs and ensure that his anger does not get the best of him again, Davis has sought professional help to deal with his temper.
“It wasn’t because I have to. it’s more so of because of the situation in the future — knowing how to deal with stuff in the future.”
