The New York Giants have parted ways with cornerback Janoris Jenkins just days after calling a fan the r-word on social media.

Jenkins used the word to clapback at a fan on Twitter who had been critical of a recent play made by Jenkins. The derogatory word, typically used as a means to degrade those with special needs, has been denounced by the NFL as well as the Special Olympics. However, Jenkins said the exchange was simply “hood talk,” refusing to accept any wrongdoing in the matter.

The organization was not pleased with Jenkins’ lack of accountability and ultimately cut him from the team that he had been apart of since 2016 when he joined as a free agent.

Coach Pat Shurmur defended the decision, stating, “From ownership to management to our football operations; we felt it was in the best interests of the franchise and the player. Obviously, what happened this week, and the refusal to acknowledge the inappropriate and offensive language, was the determining factor.”

The split appeared amicable on Jenkins part who tweeted, “Best news ever.. Thank you” shortly after the news was announced.
