A federal jury in Orlando has found Gilbert Arenas’ former personal assistant guilty of stealing roughly $2 million from the former NBA star, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
John, 40, was convicted on 11 counts of wire fraud and four counts of filing false tax documents. He worked as Arenas’ personal assistant from 2006 through 2012, during Arenas’ playing days.
According to the evidence presented, John moved about $2.19 million out of one of Arenas’ bank accounts through unauthorized online transfers into three accounts he controlled. Prosecutors said the money paid for expenses including rent, a Range Rover and a Ferrari.
The tax charges relate to joint returns filed by John and his wife with the IRS. According to the case, the returns did not report income above about $60,000, even though their actual income was far higher.
John faces up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and up to three years for each false tax document count. His sentencing hearing is set for November 19.
