The fashion world just lost one of its biggest legends. Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who made power suits cool and built a multibillion-dollar empire, has died at the age of 91.
Armani’s company confirmed the news on September 4, 2025, saying he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Milan.
For decades, Armani was the blueprint. He was the man behind those sleek, perfectly cut suits that became a Hollywood staple. Think Richard Gere in American Gigolo, red carpet looks that defined an era, and the go-to designer for stars, CEOs, and royals alike.
Born in Piacenza, Italy, Armani didn’t even start out in fashion. He first studied medicine before making the jump to design. By 1975, he had launched the label that would make him a household name. From there, Armani didn’t stop—expanding into hotels, fragrances, eyewear, and even furniture.
What set Armani apart was control. Unlike many designers who sold off parts of their brands, he kept Armani Group independent and hands-on, running it with an iron grip well into his 90s.
Mourners will be able to pay respects at Teatro Armani in Milan from September 6–7, a fitting farewell inside the creative home he built.
