About 16 months after Philando Castile was shot and killed by St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop, his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds, who streamed the aftermath live on Facebook, has reached an $800,000 settlement, according to MPR News.
The St. Anthony City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday, November 28, to approve a $675,000 settlement. A separate $125,000 settlement was reached on behalf of the city of Roseville and will be paid by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust, MPR News reported. If a court approves the plan, part of the money will go into a trust for the education of Reynolds’ daughter, who was four years old and in the back seat during the shooting on July 6, 2016.
The agreement covers any legal claims Reynolds had related to the shooting, including her detention and claims of civil rights violations. After the shooting, Reynolds was taken to the Roseville Police Department for an interview and was handcuffed for part of that time. According to MPR News, the settlement does not admit guilt on the part of the city.
Reynolds said she hopes “closing this chapter will allow us to get our lives back and move forward.”
The settlement follows a $3 million settlement with Castile’s family in June 2017. That same month, a jury acquitted Yanez of manslaughter and dangerous discharge of a firearm. He later agreed to leave the St. Anthony Police Department in exchange for a $48,500 payout, MPR News reported.
