Disturbing prison video has surfaced out of Ohio. The Associated Press obtained footage from inside the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville that shows an inmate stabbing four other inmates who were handcuffed to a table during a recreation period in June 2017.
According to the AP, the four men were playing cards when the attack happened. One of the victims, Shamieke, told the news outlet that he was left with multiple stab wounds to his arm, chest and back and has since been released from prison. “He was trying to kill us, for sure,” he said. He also told reporters he believes guards set the attack up. The guards’ union and the prosecutor who charged the accused inmate denied that claim, according to Fox 8.
The AP reported that the inmate told police he “just felt like killing someone.” Authorities initially decided not to prosecute because he was already serving a life sentence. Months later, he and a second inmate were accused of attacking a corrections officer in the prison infirmary, and a prosecutor then charged him in both incidents. He pleaded not guilty.
Authorities have not explained how the inmate got out of his handcuffs or how weapons made it out of his cell. The union that represents Ohio corrections officers told the AP the prison stopped shackling multiple inmates at the same table after the incident. The accused inmate and the second inmate are now held at the state’s supermax prison in Youngstown, and the AP reported that no guards were disciplined.
