It’s no secret that ‘Grease’ is a 1970’s classic that has been regarded in numerous tv shows and films. However, ‘Grease 2’ flopped in theaters in 1982; leaving many to believe the classic had run its course. In fact, no other follow-up to the original has been made…until now.
According to reports, a prequel to the 1978 musical ‘Grease’ is in the works thanks to screenwriter John August, who’s also responsible for ‘Big Fish’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ The story begins at the point of the song “Summer Nights” from ‘Grease’ and focuses on the fling between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, through both of their perspectives. However, Zuko’s memory of their romance is more raunchy, while Olsson memory is a bit more innocent.
The prequel would make the love story a trilogy, as it joins together the original John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie with Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield’s ‘Grease 2’.
The project is being developed by Paramount and produced by Temple Hill and Erik Feig through his company Picture Start, and so far there are no confirmed production start or release dates. In 2016, Fox aired a live version of ‘Grease’ starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens, which won five Emmys.
