A “Today Show” intruder allegedly entered 30 Rockefeller Center searching for Al Roker before confronting Craig Melvin and shouting racial slurs.
According to reports, the incident unfolded around 9 a.m. on July 16, when a man entered the NBC workplace at Rockefeller Plaza and allegedly began shouting racial slurs at the veteran journalist.
According to the New York Police Department statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly, officers received a report at approximately 9:19 a.m. about a “disorderly person” inside 30 Rockefeller Center, which falls within the Midtown North Precinct.
“Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody,” the department said. “There were no injuries reported. The investigation remains ongoing.”
Police have not publicly said what motivated the person to enter the building. However, according to TMZ, which first reported several details about the encounter, the man allegedly asked for longtime “Today” personality Al Roker after making his way beyond security. The outlet reported that the person later encountered Melvin near the dressing rooms, followed him into a restricted area, lunged toward him, and shouted a racial slur.
The alleged confrontation occurred near a dressing room and that staff members and security personnel moved quickly to protect Melvin. No physical injuries were reported, but the incident has raised a larger question about how anyone without authorization could reach an area used by anchors, guests, and production employees.
There is an important distinction within the developing coverage. Some reports have described the man as breaking into the actual “Today” studio. However, the person did not reach the main filming studio. Instead, he reached a staircase inside a secure area of 30 Rockefeller Center that would ordinarily require an employee security swipe.
That difference does not make the alleged breach less alarming. The available reporting indicates that the person moved far enough into the building to encounter one of NBC’s most recognizable Black journalists near private work areas. The exact entry route has not been officially confirmed by the NYPD or NBC.
According to The U.S. Sun, an unnamed police source believed the person may have entered through the Rockefeller Center subway access point.
Despite the disruption, the broadcast continued. Melvin, Roker, and their colleagues returned to their live duties after the person was detained. Neither Melvin nor Roker addressed the alleged encounter during the portions of the program covered by the available reports.
The moment reportedly left some NBC employees demanding answers. Staff members wanted to know how the unidentified person was able to enter without being stopped earlier. Employees were reportedly shaken by the sight of a stranger carrying a backpack inside a protected section of the building.
The confrontation reportedly occurred close to rooms where television personalities prepare before appearing in front of millions of viewers. The intruder has been arrested, though his identity has not yet been revealed.
Roker had not publicly discussed why the person may have allegedly asked for him. There is also no confirmed evidence that Roker knew the individual or had any previous contact with him.
Melvin is expected to be absent from the program soon, but his time away is not connected to Thursday’s incident. According to a separate report, Melvin announced his summer vacation during the July 15 broadcast, one day before the alleged security breach.
Thursday’s broadcast also included Savannah Guthrie announcing that she would temporarily step away from the news desk to film NBC’s upcoming “Wordle” game show. Guthrie told viewers, “I’m headed over to shoot ‘Wordle’ over the next few weeks.”
“We’re going to shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited. Cannot wait for everyone to see it,” Guthrie said.
For now, the unanswered question is not whether the broadcast carried on, but how an unauthorized person allegedly got close enough to target a Black anchor with racist abuse inside one of television’s most recognizable workplaces.
