An Atlanta high school football coach was arrested after getting into a confrontation with one of his players.
On August 26th, a video captured Carl Sledge, a lay coach from Mays High School, yelling at a player and punching him during a sideline timeout. The incident, shown on Peachtree TV, occurred during the first quarter.
After the supposed assault, the player appeared in pain but stayed upright. Sledge was then taken off the field by an Atlanta Public Schools police officer and placed under arrest.
“A lay coach for Mays High School, who is not a classroom instructor, is in police custody after an incident on the sideline during the school’s game this afternoon against Douglas County High School,” said Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Seth Coleman. “The lay coach will be charged with simple battery and face administrative charges from the district.”
Lay coaches, referred to as community coaches, serve as aides without teaching at the school or possessing formal certification.
The match took place during the Great Atlanta Bash at Midtown High School’s stadium in Atlanta. Mays High School was defeated with a final score of 48-42 against Douglas County.
