A 63 year old geometry teacher at Ozen High School in Beaumont, Texas, was arrested and charged with assault after a video reportedly showed her hitting a student in class. The teacher, identified as Mary, was released on a reported $2,500 bond.
The video was shared on Twitter on April 8, 2016. It reportedly shows the incident during a fourth period math class after a student asked about a grade. In the clip, the teacher can be heard raising her voice at the student and slapping him with an open hand several times. When the student asks why, she repeats his words back to him. Authorities arrested and charged her with one count of assault the same day the video spread.
It is not clear what led up to the incident. A student who witnessed it told 12 News the behavior was out of character for a teacher he described as cool, saying it was just that day. Other students reportedly shared similar views of her.
The school reportedly placed the teacher on administrative leave soon after her arrest. No further details about next steps for the teacher or the student had been released at the time of writing.
