Hip-hop artists are branching out beyond their musical talents and venturing into other industries. Once confined to recording studios, these individuals are now building empires that span fashion, cosmetics, media, and technology. They’re not just leveraging their fame but also using their sharp wit to diversify their portfolios and expand their influence.

Jay-Z: The Blueprint for Business

When it comes to artists making a name for themselves outside of music, Jay-Z stands out. Starting from rock bottom in Brooklyn, Hov used his rapping skills to rise to fame. Shortly after reaching success, Jay began his business journey by co-founding Roc-A-Fella Records in the mid-90s. This was just the first step toward becoming a business mogul. He later co-founded the clothing line Rocawear, which quickly became a cultural staple in the 2000s.

Jay-Z didn’t stop at fashion. He ventured into the alcoholic beverage industry, investing in Ace of Spades champagne and D’Ussé cognac. He also acquired the streaming platform Tidal, placing him among other significant industry heavy-hitters. Additionally, Jay’s Roc Nation Sports agency manages a roster of major professional athletes, adding to his extensive portfolio.

Snoop Dogg: The Media Magician

Snoop “Keep a bag” Dogg is one of the most versatile individuals in hip-hop. The California native has sustained his fame and popularity by adding his personal touch to many industries. Beyond his iconic music career, Snoop’s entrepreneurial spirit is as diverse as his long-standing discography. Today, Snoop is a major player in the cannabis industry with his media platform, Merry Jane, and flower collection, Leafs By Snoop. He also ventured into technology with his app, Snoopify, and into the culinary world with a best-selling cookbook and a cooking show with Martha Stewart.

His latest business venture, Broadus Foods, brings his personality into the food industry with products ranging from syrup to breakfast cereal. Snoop’s ability to generate revenue and stay relevant across different sectors proves he is determined to leave behind a great legacy.

Rihanna: The Fenty Fashion Queen

From dominating the dance floor to running a billion-dollar business, Rihanna’s evolution is unmatched. She broke into the media with chart-topping hits and iconic style and seamlessly transitioned into the business world, reshaping the cosmetic and fashion industries through her Fenty brand. Launched in 2017, Fenty Beauty quickly became a force by offering a wide range of foundation shades, setting a standard for inclusivity.

This success was followed by her lingerie line, Savage X Fenty, which highlights diversity and body positivity. Rihanna’s business achievements have not only revamped markets but also transformed industry norms. Her ability to identify market needs and turn them into successful ventures underscores her brilliance as a businesswoman, ensuring her influence for years to come.

50 Cent: Street Hustler Turned Media Hustler

50 Cent burst onto the scene with his gritty rap persona and the success of his debut album, “Get Rich or Die Tryin’.” He then launched G-Unit Records and G-Unit Clothing line. His investment in beverage company VitaminWater, after Coca-Cola acquired its parent company, reportedly earned him over $100 million.

Currently, 50 Cent is diversifying his portfolio through acting, producing, directing, and owning stakes in brands like Le Chemin du Roi champagne and Branson Cognac. His “Power” television series continues to be a major success despite the cancellation of its second installment.

Rick Ross: The Biggest “Bawse”

Channeling his larger-than-life persona, Rick Ross has turned his flair into multiple businesses that showcase his quick wit. Starting with his Maybach Music Group, the Florida rapper built a powerhouse label that continues to generate hits. Outside of music, Ross ventured into the food and beverage industry, owning numerous Wingstop franchises and launching a line of spirits with Belaire champagne and Luc Belaire Rosé. He is also involved in real estate to further expand his business portfolio. Over the years, Ross has solidified his spot in the world of hip-hop entrepreneurs, turning his hustle into a thriving empire.
