Happy Birthday BeatKing: Celebrating the Life and Musical Legacy of “Club Godzilla”

Houston’s music scene has lost one of its brightest stars.

On Thursday, the world was shocked by the sudden death of BeatKing, a beloved rapper, producer, and central figure in the city’s hip-hop and party culture. As the news spread online, there was widespread speculation about the cause of his passing. On Friday, his manager, Tasha Felder, confirmed that the hitmaker had suffered a pulmonary embolism.

The tragic incident occurred while BeatKing was at the Urban One/Radio One station for a morning takeover. He suddenly fainted and was rushed to a nearby Houston hospital. Despite medical efforts, he passed away later that day, with his two daughters by his side.

Felder also reflected on BeatKing’s profound impact, saying, “It is truly sad; we loved him so much. He was the best part of the club for over a decade.” She continued, “He has produced and worked with so many artists, that his sound will forever live. He loved his daughters, his music, and his fans. We will love him forever.”

BeatKing, whose real name was Justin Riley, gained international recognition with his 2020 viral hit “Then Leave,” which took over TikTok. However, long before his rise to mainstream fame, he was a staple in Texas’ party scene throughout the 2010s. His tracks were must-plays in clubs and college parties, making him a local legend before the world caught on.

In addition to “Then Leave,” BeatKing’s discography includes hits like “SDAB” featuring 2 Chainz and Juicy J, “Outside,” and “Keep It Poppin” featuring Ludacris and Queendom Come. His ability to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the industry solidified his status as a top-tier producer and artist.
