How Close Should Your Man Be With His Baby Mama

I’m sure, like clockwork, that you all gathered around your television sets Monday evening and watched the latest episode of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta. I won’t lie, I did too. One of the highlights of the episode was Stevie J’s marriage proposal to girlfriend Joseline. It was a sweet gesture until he also “proposed” to Mimi, the mother of his daughter, at the same time.  On season one of the show it was obvious that Mimi and Stevie J had a lot of unresolved issues and she finally let him go on season 2. But as parents of a small child, they do have to co-parent, so they are around each other a lot. Although Stevie J and Mimi are the extreme, how close is “too close” for your man to be to his baby mama?

Is there something wrong with Stevie J buying Mimi expensive gifts if he could afford to do so? On one hand, Mimi definitely deserves it after all the BS she’s put up with in the past, but on the other, Stevie has a girlfriend at home. Put yourself in Joseline’s shoes for a second. Would you be okay with your boyfriend buying gifts for the mother of his child, even if he is draping you in gifts as well?  As someone’s “baby mama” I can’t fault Mimi for accepting the gifts. It’s clear she has no real intentions of getting back with her ex at the moment but if you’re gifting me a brand new car, bags and cash, who am I to say no? That is definitely a boundary that he and his new girl need to establish and I am not involved with it.

Then again, you have those guys that believe that “once their p*ssy, always their p*ssy” and that they can run back whenever they want. At that moment it is up to the mother to let it be known that as long as you are in a relationship, their will be no “running back.” Unfortunately, many baby mothers don’t think that way.

For your child’s sake, it is important for two parents to remain cordial. This we know for certain. Is there a such thing as too cordial?

So I ask this, if you have a child, would you accept gifts from their father? If you were dating a guy, would it be okay for him to give his baby mama gifts? What boundaries should he absolutely not cross?
