Jason Lee is rarely at a loss for words, and when our correspondent Nya caught up with him on the red carpet, he had plenty to say about the women who shaped his journey and the critics who keep questioning whether he truly rides for Black women.
Asked how it feels to be known as someone who consistently stands up for Black women in the industry, from Rihanna to Keke Palmer, he leaned all the way in. He said he loves the conversation so much he planned to clip it and share it, because the accusation that he does not protect or support Black women is one he hears often and flatly rejects.His answer was a roll call. Are you talking to Queen Latifah? Are you talking to Rihanna? Are you talking to Jasmine Crockett? For him, those names are not props. They are women he describes as significant parts of his journey, the ones who pour into him and stand in his corner when it counts.
That corner, by his account, runs deep. Jason Lee shared that just one day earlier, as he made his way to be honored, Rihanna called him personally with a simple request. She wanted him to send pictures of what he was wearing because she wanted to encourage him. That is the kind of relationship he says defines his circle, the type of women who check on him in real time and remind him he is supported, and he says he works to give that same energy right back.
Still, he is clear eyed about the nature of his platform. As someone who built a career on commentary, he knows the job sometimes requires him to be a critic, and he refuses to make that selective. Jason Lee put it plainly. Black women, white women, gay women, straight women, Latina, everybody can catch a critique when the moment calls for it. He framed it as fairness rather than favoritism, the idea that real respect includes the willingness to hold everyone to the same standard instead of exempting any one group from honest feedback.
When our correspondent called him an equal opportunity hand, he took the framing and ran with it, joking that he is a DEI attacker because, in his words, everybody can get a critic.
It was classic Jason Lee. Funny, unbothered, and unwilling to let a narrative about him go unchallenged. Behind the humor was a real point about how he sees his role, balancing genuine loyalty to the women who built him up with the honesty he believes his platform demands. He is not interested in performing allyship, and he is not interested in pretending that criticism and care cannot live in the same person.
