Hurricane Melissa made a catastrophic landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday afternoon, roaring ashore as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds reaching 185 mph. The National Hurricane Center confirmed it as one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin. Although the storm has since weakened slightly to a Category 4, with sustained winds of 150 mph, it remains an extreme threat. The eye of the storm was last located just south of Montego Bay, moving slowly north-northeast at around 8 mph, prolonging the island’s exposure to life-threatening conditions.

At least seven deaths have been reported in connection with the storm. Three fatalities occurred in Haiti over the weekend, another in the Dominican Republic, where one person remains missing, and three more in Jamaica before the hurricane officially made landfall. Officials continue to warn of severe consequences as the storm brings widespread damage, with total structural failure likely in areas directly in Melissa’s path.
Jamaica is experiencing catastrophic conditions, including violent winds, torrential rainfall, flooding, landslides, and storm surges up to 13 feet on the southern coast. In some mountainous areas, wind speeds may be up to 30 percent stronger due to elevation, increasing the threat of landslides and total building collapse. Rainfall estimates range between 15 to 30 inches, with isolated areas possibly receiving as much as 40 inches.
As Melissa moves on from Jamaica, it is forecast to strike eastern Cuba next and continue toward the southeastern Bahamas. Cuban authorities are already evacuating hundreds of thousands in preparation. Emergency officials across the region are urging residents and tourists to stay sheltered and heed all official warnings.
Melissa’s slow movement has compounded its destruction, causing prolonged and relentless damage. Officials have warned that this will be one of the most challenging natural disasters to recover from, with power and communication outages already widespread across Jamaica.
Videos from various parts of Jamaica have surfaced online showing massive flooding, sweeping away anything in its path.
