The Trump administration is under fire for allegedly using deceptive tactics to detain and deport immigrants who are following legal procedures. According to The Guardian, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been arresting people at routine check-ins, immigration court hearings, and even inside government contractor offices where they were told to sign paperwork.

ICE has reportedly been given daily arrest quotas of at least 1,200 to 1,500 people. The pressure to meet these targets has allegedly led officers to focus on “low-hanging fruit”, immigrants who willingly show up for required check-ins rather than those with serious criminal records.

For many immigrants, attending a scheduled ICE check-in or court appearance is part of their legal obligation while they wait for a decision on their immigration status. But under this new policy, simply showing up could result in immediate detention and deportation.

Lawyers in New York say dozens of their clients have been detained since Trump took office, including a mother and her young daughter who were deported the day after attending what they thought was a routine appointment. They weren’t even aware they had lost their appeal to stay in the U.S. when they walked in.

In New York, immigrants attending check-ins are now reporting that their passports are being confiscated, their children are being fingerprinted, and they are being forced to wear ankle monitors. Similar arrests are being reported in New Jersey, Florida, and other states.

In one case in Florida, community members say ICE lured immigrants into a government contractor’s office under the pretense of fixing an issue with their monitoring device—only to detain them on the spot.

In addition to targeting people at check-ins, the Trump administration has also given ICE the green light to arrest immigrants at courthouses, including immigration courts.

ICE’s intensified crackdown has even caused friction within the agency itself. According to reports, high-level officials have expressed frustration when arrest quotas aren’t met, further pushing officers to prioritize easy arrests over more serious cases.

With these tactics under scrutiny, immigration advocates are calling for greater transparency and legal protections for those following immigration procedures. But as the Trump administration continues to push for mass deportations, it remains to be seen whether these concerns will slow down ICE’s operations.
