Iggy Azalea is rejecting ‘blackfishing’ accusations after social media users criticized her appearance, specifically her skin tone in her latest music video.

Following the release of the “I Am The Stripclub” music video, Twitter users called out the rapper’s look, suggesting that she was ‘blackfishing,’ which is a term used to describe non-Black persons who utilize hair and makeup to make themselves appear, Black, mixed-race, or racially ambiguous. Critics of the video claimed her complexion is darker and that her usual blonde hair is also a significantly darker color.

When apparel brand Boohoo uploaded photos from the video, Twitter fans vented their frustrations and backed Azalea in the comments section.

One Twitter user tweeted, “It just so happens she’s imitating a black female aesthetic surrounded by a bunch of black people in the background.”

Another supported Azalea, adding, “It’s just the lighting, y’all so weird.” While one other user said, “She puts on a black wig and has a tan, and y’all are in an uproar? Y’all are funny. Some of y’all should get over yourselves. It ain’t that deep, I promise.”

Since then, Azalea has taken to social media herself to deny the blackfishing claims, calling them “ridiculous and baseless.”

She said, “I can’t care about something that ridiculous and baseless. I’m wearing a shade 6 in Armani foundation; it’s the same shade I’ve worn for the last 3 years. It’s the same shade in every music video since Sally Walker. Suddenly I wear a black wig in a club scene & it’s an issue.”

Azalea added that “everyone in the club scene looks darker” because of production and lighting.

She explained, “This is the color I wear; it’s on the arm color of a tan, white person. I’m not wearing crazy dark makeup at ALL. Everyone in the club scene looks darker; it’s a club scene! I’m sick of ppl trying to twist my words or make shit a problem when all I’ve done is try hair color.”

Even though she is receiving a lot of hate for her latest look, Azalea decided to choose love instead of violence; she said, “To everyone showing me love: Thank you for dedicating your day to me & helping me promote, I love you! To everyone showing me hate: Thank you for dedicating your day to me & helping me promote, I love you!”
