IKEA just proved that even its most random ideas can turn into real products.
What started as a one-day joke has now become a global rollout, with IKEA teaming up with Chupa Chups, a globally recognized lollipop brand, to create a meatball-flavored lollipop inspired by its iconic Swedish dish. The meatball lollipop blends savory notes associated with IKEA’s famous meatballs and the sweetness of lingonberry into a single bite.
“Chupa Chups has been busy in the kitchen developing a playful sweet that’s inspired by the flavours and feeling of the iconic Swedish meatball and its lingonberry companion,” the official release stated. While the flavor concept leans savory, the design keeps things familiar. The lollipop is smooth, glossy, and red, visually echoing the brand’s signature lingonberry sauce rather than the meatballs themselves.
The release isn’t small either. IKEA confirmed that one million of the limited-edition lollipops will be distributed worldwide, and they won’t cost customers anything. The candy will be available for free in stores this June, giving shoppers a chance to experience the unexpected creation firsthand. Despite its inspiration, the product contains no meat and is completely vegan.
The move comes after strong public reaction to the original April 1 announcement.
“On 1 April, we invited people to imagine a meatball lollipop. And we couldn’t help but take it one step further – especially after the enthusiastic response,” said Ingka Group Commercial Manager Javier Quiñones. “Together with Chupa Chups, we are now bringing a playful take of that idea to life. It is a fun way to celebrate our love of food, and to show that even a simple joke can turn into something real.”
For Chupa Chups, the collaboration fits right into its creative playbook.
“We are always looking for new ways to surprise and delight people – it’s part of our ‘Forever Fun’ spirit,” said Global Marketing Manager Martin Hofling. “This limited-edition lollipop is our playful tribute to a flavour that people all over the world associate with IKEA, reimagined in a way only Chupa Chups can do.”
The rollout taps into a bigger moment where nostalgia, curiosity, and viral ideas are driving real-world products. What started as a scroll-stopping prank is now something customers can actually taste, turning a joke into a global conversation piece.
