NBA star Iman Shumpert opened up about his wife Teyana Taylor’s feelings about his rap career in a recent episode of their E! reality TV show We Got Love Teyana & Iman.

“Early on, she didn’t like that I did so much music,” Iman revealed in the clip. “She was like, ‘It’s just weird, like a basketball player who is a rapper too.’ But I think little by little, she sees how much I like it.”

He continues, “I think music is cool because it’s definitely a change of pace for an athlete.”

The hoopster started writing poetry in school, and then his brother introduced him to music. His introduction to hip-hop came in the form of an Ice Cube, and when he heard the beat, he realized Iman could say whatever he wanted.

Iman further opened up being able to connect with people through his music in a way that he’s unable to on the basketball court.

“I’m so used to trying to not allow myself on the court to ever make it personal. This side of things, being an artist, is like me trying to connect with people in a way that I can make you feel like you’re just like me.”
