In a surprising move for some, the Indiana Fever announced on Sunday that they fired coach Christie Sides following a disappointing end to the season.
This decision comes just after Caitlin Clark, the 2024 WNBA Draft’s No. 1 overall pick and sensational Rookie of the Year, saw her inaugural season conclude with a swift playoff sweep by the Connecticut Sun. Despite an impressive individual performance by Clark, averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, her efforts were not enough to save Sides’ job. Under her leadership, the Fever ended the season with a 33-47 record, managing to claw their way to the No. 6 seed after a rocky start, only to crash out of the playoffs in the first round.
In a statement, Fever president of basketball operations Kelly Krauskopf expressed gratitude for Sides’ role during a challenging transition period. However, the gravity of the situation cannot be overstated.
“While decisions like these are never easy, it is also imperative that we remain bold and assertive in the pursuit of our goals, which includes maximizing our talent and bringing another WNBA championship back to Indiana,” Krauskopf wrote in a statement.

Last month, the league made headlines when the Chicago Sky terminated coach Teresa Weatherspoon after one season, which significantly impacted rookie Angel Reese.
