A report from the website Word On Da Street claimed that federal agents used Instagram posts to make more than 350 drug arrests in a single weekend and seize about $7 million in cash, drugs and stolen goods. The site said the DEA and FBI teamed up on more than 200 sting operations across the country after noticing suspects showing off drugs, guns and cash online.
One caveat before anyone repeats this: we have not seen a statement from the DEA or the FBI confirming those numbers, and the report did not link to an official announcement. Treat the claim as unverified until the agencies say otherwise.
What is not in doubt is that law enforcement does watch social media. Posts, photos and location tags can end up as evidence, which is why lawyers and police alike keep warning people not to broadcast anything they would not want a prosecutor to see.
The takeaway is simple. Instagram is great for sharing your outfit, your business and your best moments. It is a terrible place to show off anything illegal.
