The Irvine Police Department has recently made headlines after debuting its Tesla Cybertruck, making the department the first in the country to include the vehicle in police use. The futuristic truck, which cost the city approximately $153,175.03, might be an impressive sight for most. However, the vehicle won’t be hitting the streets as a patrol car no time soon.

On Tuesday, the department showcased their newest addition to the lineup in a dramatic video clip shared to its social media platforms. While the vehicle caught the attention of many users, mainly for its cost and the risks of having it on the road, the department has clarified that the truck will be used for community engagement and will replace another aging D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) vehicle.

“For over three decades, our DARE officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite students,” the department said on Facebook.

Additionally, as far as the price tag, the Cybertruck is undeniably expensive, especially compared to the Ford Police Interceptor, which costs around $116,000 and has a lifespan of three to four years. But, in response to the backlash, the department defended its decision to purchase the vehicle, stating that the Cybertruck has an expected lifespan of 10 years.

Although the vehicle isn’t intended to be a patrol car, the department hinted that the Cybertruck could be used in other emergency services.

“While the fully equipped vehicle won’t be used as a patrol car, it can respond to emergencies and assist the community when needed,” the department added.
