Is Balenciaga Capitalizing On Consumers' Obsession With Labels? Their Lay's Bag Suggests So

Balenciaga Lays (Instagram)

Is Balenciaga playing in our faces at this point, or are they really trying to take fashion to new levels with a string of unique yet whimsical creations?

That is the question being posed with the first look at the brand’s upcoming collaboration with Lay’s potato chips. The mash-up consists of handbags shaped like crinkled-up potato chip bags that are the exact ones seen on grocery store shelves containing the popular chip. The only difference is these luxury snack bags say “Balenciaga” on the front.

The Balenciaga Lay’s handbag debuted on the runway at Paris Fashion Week. Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna, also showcased the odd clutches on his Instagram. Though they are not for sale yet, the brand said they’d be available as part of the Summer 2023 collection with a $1,500 price tag. The bags are made out of genuine leather and feature a zipper at the top to keep personal belongings safely concealed. Balenciaga will present the bags in “flavors” Salt & Vinegar, Limón, Classic, and Flamin’ Hot.

This might be an unlikely pairing, but Balenciaga is known for materializing outrageous concepts in recent years. Consider the $1,790 trash bag pouch or the $250 shoe lace earrings that pushed the boundaries of how everyday items can be transformed into high-end fashion.

As of now, there is no official release date for when the Balenciaga and Lay’s partnership will drop next year. Are you putting your money aside for this intricate bag?
