A video making the rounds on Facebook left us with a question worth debating: is it possible to be too ride or die for the person you love?
In the video, a woman who goes by Amie says her boyfriend had just come home after time in jail. She says that to keep money coming in and to keep him from going back, she took on illegal work to cover the household bills. According to her own account, he ended the relationship when he found out. She says she has no regrets and is proud that she stood by him. We cannot verify anything beyond what she shared, and we are not here to judge a stranger. We are here to talk about the bigger idea.
Loyalty is a beautiful thing, but it has limits. If the plan to protect your partner from legal trouble puts you in legal trouble, the math does not add up. Riding for someone is great until you realize you are the one steering toward the cliff.
Supporting a partner who is coming home and trying to rebuild is admirable. It takes patience, and many people with a record have a hard time finding an employer willing to give them a chance. But support can look like cutting the cable, trimming the budget, picking up extra shifts or helping with a job search. It should not mean putting your own safety, freedom or self worth on the line.
The takeaway is simple. A partner’s fresh start and your own well being should move in the same direction. Hold your person down, but never at the expense of yourself.
