At the recent Dreamville Festival in North Carolina, J. Cole took a moment during his performance to reflect on his recent release, “7 Minute Drill,” a diss track aimed at Kendrick Lamar. The track was a response to Lamar’s “Like That,” released just weeks before.
Cole, however, expressed regret over this move, labeling it as one of his “lamest” decisions.”I’ve been moving on my own accord… now why am I saying all of that?” Cole pondered aloud to his audience.
He introduced his latest project, “Might Delete Later,” to the fans, noting its importance as a stepping stone to a larger work he’s been crafting. Despite his pride in the project, Cole singled out the diss track as a point of personal disappointment. Addressing the crowd further, Cole admitted to feeling out of alignment with his true purpose after releasing the track.
“It’s one part on that project that makes me feel like, ‘Man, that’s the lamest shit I ever did in my life,'” he confessed. The backlash and the call for confrontation left him conflicted, given his respect and admiration for his peers, including Kendrick Lamar.
Cole’s candid moment extended to a direct acknowledgment of Lamar, expressing hope that there was no bad blood stirred by his actions. He sought forgiveness for what he termed a “misstep” and expressed a desire to realign with his purpose, emphasizing love and forgiveness above all.
