Earlier this month, Cleveland Cavaliers’ J.R. Smith was placed under criminal investigation for allegedly stealing a fan’s phone.
According to Bleacher Report, the incident took place in Manhattan in July after a fan tried to sneak a picture with the New Jersey-bred baller. As the fan tried to snap the pic, Smith reportedly grabbed the phone and tossed it in a nearby construction zone.
As a result, the fan reported the incident to the police, which sparked an investigation into the matter. Now, just four weeks later, the shooting guard has turned himself in on charges in connection to the incident.
According to TMZ, Smith was slapped with a misdemeanor for criminal mischief and issued a ticket summons to appear in court at a later date. In the meantime, his attorney called the entire ordeal “nonsense.”
“This is nonsense,” Alex Spiro said. “We aren’t responding to nonsense. He was issued a ticket.”
