Jamie Foxx has agreed to produce a documentary based on the life of R&B legend Luther Vandross.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Foxx’s production company Foxxhole Productions and Colin Firth’s Raindog Films are set to produce the film along with Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing.
“Luther is one of our G.O.A.T.s,” Foxx said in a statement. “He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses.”
“Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry,” said the films Director, Dawn Porter. “I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story.”
Additionally, there are plans to develop a biopic based on Luther Vandross’ only biography book, “Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandross,” written by experienced music journalist Craig Seymour, who recently spoke out about not being contacted for archival materials or interviews.
Luther Vandross, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 54, holds a prominent place in music history, with eight Grammy Awards to his name, for his timeless hits like “Never Too Much,” “Here and Now,” and “Dance With My Father.” His contributions have solidified his status as one of the greatest singers of R&B music.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary “will follow the iconic artist as he charted his own course becoming one of the most decorated and influential pop artists of all time,” the announcement said, adding that it will “capture the intensely private Grammy-winning artist’s passion for music, global rise, and personal struggles.” It will also include “access to his never-before-seen personal archive,” and his friends and family are in full support.
