Jasmine Crockett walked onstage at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday night and presented Chris Brown and Usher with a recognition in the Congressional Record for their careers in music.The Congressional Record is the official daily account of what happens in the House and Senate. Members can enter statements into it that have nothing to do with legislation, which is how a tribute to two R&B singers ends up in a federal document. It carries no money, no law and no binding effect. What it does is put something on the permanent record of Congress, which is why artists, athletes and hometown institutions get these recognitions all the time.

Crockett, a Democrat who has represented Texas’ 30th Congressional District since 2023, appeared during the Arlington stop of Brown and Usher’s joint R&B Tour. She was joined by Texas state Rep. Venton Jones and producer RoccStar, who has worked with Brown for years and said on Instagram that he was the one who connected Brown to Congress for the recognition. Crockett told the sold out crowd that she wanted the two artists’ contributions documented officially, saying “Right now, we are experiencing Black joy to the highest level.” She also slipped in a line about “a few scammers up in D.C.” before telling the Dallas crowd they had a real one representing them. Brown thanked her and the two embraced onstage.On paper the honor tracks with the résumés. Usher has eight Grammys and four albums that reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Brown has two Grammys and three No. 1 albums on the same chart. The two of them selling out NFL stadiums together this summer is the kind of run that usually gets a plaque somewhere.
The problem for a lot of people watching was the timing. Brown pleaded guilty on July 24 of this year at Southwark Crown Court in London to a charge called affray, which under English law means using or threatening unlawful violence in a way that would make an ordinary bystander fear for their own safety. Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on October 26, roughly six weeks from the night Crockett handed him the recognition. He has been free on bail since May 2025, when he was arrested at a Manchester hotel and later released after agreeing to a 5 million pound security, which allowed his tour to continue.
Conservative outlets moved first and moved hard. The Daily Caller ran the story with a headline calling Brown a convicted woman beater. News24 Australia built a segment around Crockett honoring him despite his record. TMZ, which broke the video, noted the questions the honor raised about whether a member of Congress should be handing a federal recognition to someone in Brown’s position. The reaction online split in the way these things usually split, between people who saw a congresswoman celebrating two artists at the peak of a historic stadium run and people who saw a conviction being waved past.
Brown and Usher launched the R&B Tour in June, pairing two artists who have rarely shared a stage at that scale. The Arlington date was one of the biggest stops on the run.Sentencing in London is set for October 26.
