Straight Outta Compton star Jason Mitchell is taking his talents back to the big screen, following his controversial dismissal from Showtime’s The Chi.
According to TMZ, the actor, who rose to fame after his portrayal of Eazy-E in the NWA biopic, has landed a lead role in yet another biopic.
The film, titled, 50 Shots, will explore one of the most controversial police-involved shootings in recent history. In fact, according to the publication, its title references the 50 bullets polices fired in 2006, killing 23-year-old Sean Bell in Jamaica, Queens.
Mitchell is set to play Bell, who was killed hours before his wedding. In the fatal incident, Bell had just finished celebrating his bachelor party with his father and two friends when officials opened fire on the car.
At the time, police said they were investigating a nearby strip club and believed the men were armed. However, they were not.
The city reached a settlement with Bell’s family in 2010 for $7 million, but the three cops involved were acquitted.
Mitchell has signed on to star and executive produce alongside Tru of TruVision Films. Although the film has been in the works for three years, Bell’s family, especially his father’s William, have been heavily involved. In fact, sources tell TMZ, Mitchell spoke with William almost every day since securing the role.
