The NYPD is searching for three teenage boys in the Javits Frimpong shooting, as the 15 year old’s family returned Saturday to the Bronx block where he was killed and pleaded for those responsible to come forward. Police say the suspects are between 16 and 18 years old and were last seen wearing all black clothing and blue surgical masks.
Javits was walking to DreamYard Preparatory School just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday when he was shot once in the stomach near East 171st Street and Crotona Place, close to Crotona Park. Police say he ran about a block before collapsing. Officers drove him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made, and police have not said what led to the shooting.
His father, Thomas Frimpong, says his son had been bullied at school. He said the principal told him three days before the shooting that two students who had been bullying Javits were suspended for a week. Javits had told him that one boy kept bothering him at lunch and that he had reported it several times. Thomas Frimpong says he believes he knows who is responsible, but police have not named any suspects.
“The school can testify my son is always quiet. Always,” he said. “I don’t think they are going to go free for killing an innocent child.”
On Saturday, NYPD officers escorted Javits’s family as they returned to the corner where he was shot for a rally organized by the African Advisory Council. Community members and city leaders gathered with them to demand justice. The family was too emotional to speak on camera, but a family friend, through tears, asked whoever did this to “turn yourself in for us to make peace.” A vigil was also held Friday at the spot where Javits fell.
Javits moved from Ghana to the Bronx about a year ago to live with his father. His mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, stayed in Ghana. On Saturday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Trump agreed to grant her a visa so she can travel to New York for her son’s funeral, and Ghana’s government said it will pay for her trip.
