Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff says he wants to be a hands on father to his son, and he’s asking a court for shared custody.
According to TMZ, Ratliff, a three time Pro Bowler who just signed a $40 million contract extension, was hit with a paternity suit in April by a woman named Tonitura, who said he was the father of her then unborn child. A paternity test confirmed it.
Tonitura has asked for child support, and sources told TMZ she is seeking more than state guidelines provide. Ratliff responded with court papers saying he wants to be involved in his son’s life, and he is asking for shared custody. The two are due back in court soon.
Ratliff’s rep says he is visiting his son at least three times a week. “Jay’s stepped up to become a good father, he loves his child,” the rep told TMZ, “and he’s letting the judicial system run its course.”
However the money gets sorted out, it’s good to see a father fighting for time with his child. That’s what matters most.
