Negotiations between the United States and Iran have come to a standstill following a high-stakes meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan. JD Vance, who led the American delegation, confirmed that despite a marathon session lasting 21 hours, the two sides were unable to find common ground.
“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement,” Vance stated shortly after the talks wrapped up. He suggested that the lack of a deal would ultimately hurt the other side more than the U.S., adding, “And I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America. So we go back to the United States having not come to an agreement.”
The primary sticking point appears to be Iran’s long-term nuclear intentions. While Vance noted that certain enrichment facilities have been destroyed, the U.S. is holding out for a more permanent guarantee. “The simple fact is we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance explained. He emphasized that this remains a “core goal” for Donald Trump.
Throughout the process, the U.S. team, which included Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and various officials from the State Department and National Security Council, remained in constant contact with Donald Trump and the Cabinet.
Vance insisted the American side entered the room with an open mind. “I think that we were quite flexible, we were quite accommodating,” Vance told reporters. “Donald Trump told us you need to come here in good faith and make your best effort to get a deal.”
Despite those efforts, Iran did not accept the U.S. terms. Vance chose not to dive into specific sticking points, such as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which had been a major part of earlier ceasefire discussions.
Before the talks began, Vance had warned that the U.S. would not be manipulated, stating, “If they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive.” For now, it seems those warnings have led to a stalemate.
