New details surrounding Jed York’s arrest are providing a clearer picture of the conversations that allegedly led the San Francisco 49ers principal owner into an undercover police operation in Ohio.
According to an incident report obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, York contacted an advertisement posted on a website authorities described as being associated with prostitution on Saturday, August 22. Investigators said York identified himself as “Joe” while communicating with the person behind the ad, who was actually connected to the undercover operation. The report says he reached out twice Saturday and contacted the ad again Sunday morning after receiving no response to his earlier messages.
An undercover officer eventually responded to York’s third message Sunday. Investigators said the two then discussed meeting that morning in the East Palestine area. Police said York was directed toward the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community and given a “fictitious lot number” as part of the operation.
The latest report also clears up a discrepancy surrounding the amount of money allegedly discussed. Earlier court reporting indicated York arranged to pay $140 for sexual activity. However, the more detailed incident report reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle says investigators quoted a price of $160 for one hour, and York agreed to that amount. Authorities said York had $160 in cash when officers stopped him.
According to the Chronicle’s review of the police report, York arrived in an Avis rental vehicle and messaged that he could not locate the lot number he had been given. Investigators said marked officers stopped him as he moved back toward the main road. Court records place the arrest at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Sunday, August 23.
The mobile home community has also pushed back against suggestions that it had anything to do with the operation. TMZ reported that representatives described the property as “not a hooker zone” and said they had been told police were not using park addresses for the sting. ABC7 reported that the community separately said the arrest was shocking and that local police assured management its addresses were not being used as part of the operation.
The case moved through court quickly. According to The Associated Press, York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution, but prosecutors amended that count to disorderly conduct. He pleaded no contest Monday to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. Prosecutors said the criminal tools charge involved the cellphone used to respond to the undercover advertisement.
The Associated Press reported that York received one day in jail on each offense, with the sentences running concurrently, and received credit for the day he had already served. He was also fined $1,150. Court records showed that his cellphone was returned while the $160 seized by authorities was forfeited to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. Records also showed that York completed an online course connected to the case.
Beyond the criminal case, the Jed York arrest now creates a separate issue for the NFL. In a statement published by NFL.com, a league spokesperson said, “We are aware of the matter, which will be reviewed under the personal conduct policy.” NFL.com reported that the policy can apply to team owners as well as players and other league personnel.
The 49ers have indicated they do not plan to discuss the case further. In a statement published by NFL.com, the organization said, “As this is a legal matter, which has been resolved, we will not be providing any further comment at this time.”
York’s position makes the situation particularly significant for one of the NFL’s most recognizable franchises. He took control of the organization’s operations from his parents in 2008. Under his leadership, San Francisco has reached three Super Bowls, including appearances following the 2012, 2019, and 2023 seasons.
York also has deep ties to the area where the arrest occurred. The 49ers say he was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, roughly 20 miles from East Palestine, and attended Cardinal Mooney High School before studying finance and history at the University of Notre Dame.
