Jennifer Lopez opened up about her upbringing in her latest documentary, “Halftime.”

Lopez shares some things about her childhood and her strained relationship with her mother, Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodriguez.

Lopez says her mother was a tough woman who used to “beat the sh*t” out of her and her siblings.

“She did what she had to do to survive, and it made her strong, but it also made her tough,” Lopez said. “She beat the sh*t out of us.”

Rodriguez also spoke about her parenting styles. She revealed that she and Lopez would constantly argue about her education. Rodriguez says she insisted Lopez focus on school so she wouldn’t have to rely on men.

“I was far from the perfect mother,” she says. “The one thing I can always say, everything I did, I did with their best interest at heart. I always had the highest expectations of them. It wasn’t to be critical. It was only to show you that you could do better. And Jennifer, she gave me the hardest time, to tell you the truth. We butted heads a lot.”

The documentary made its debut on June 8th at the Tribeca Film Festival. Shortly afterward, the film became available on Netflix on June 14th.

The documentary gives viewers a closer look behind the scenes at Lopez’s determination to achieve icon status. The film highlights Lopez’s performances on screen and stages worldwide, from her Super Bowl halftime show to the recent presidential inauguration.

“The documentary focuses on an international superstar who has inspired people for decades with her perseverance, creative brilliance, and cultural contributions. And it’s only the beginning,” Tribeca Film Festival says.
