Jermaine Dupri is giving Cardi B her flowers for shifting the culture and breaking old industry rules.
In a clip recently shared by Kay South Media, the So So Def mogul explained how Cardi’s rise to fame changed the blueprint for every woman coming up in the rap game today.
According to Dupri, before Cardi arrived, there was a lingering idea that female artists needed a man’s approval or a major male lead to really take off. Cardi, he says, completely trashed that narrative.
Looking back at her journey from social media and reality TV to the top of the charts, Dupri pointed out that her success was a massive wake up call. He believes her path showed women in music globally that they could build their own brands and find massive success on their own terms. By moving with total independence, she opened a door that had been at least partially closed for a long time, allowing a new wave of talent to see that they didn’t have to wait for anyone’s permission to get started.
I don’t think until Cardi B came, female rappers realized that they didn’t need a man to pop off, basically her come up was the door opener for female artists all over the world,” Dupri said in the video. He made it clear that her arrival was a pivotal moment for the industry, proving that women could lead the charge and dominate the charts through their own vision and hard work.
The legendary producer’s comments come at a time when female rappers are more visible and successful than ever. Dupri credited Cardi’s specific “come up” as the spark that let everyone see what was possible.
He highlighted that this shift showed the world that women can compete at the highest level without any handicaps. “We could do this just as well as anybody else could do it,” he noted, doubling down on the idea that the playing field has been leveled.
