While reflecting on his past role as Vice President of Urban A&R at Koch Records, Jim Jones recently revealed that he turned down early opportunities to sign Drake, J. Cole, and The Weeknd.
During an interview with “The Art of Dialogue,” Jones said J. Cole was often present in his studio.
“J. Cole used to be in my studio all the time. I can say that wholeheartedly,” he stated. At the time, Jones had direct access to rising talent, including Drake, whose music was brought to him by Alan Grunblatt.
Despite being impressed by Drake’s lyrical ability, Jones admitted he struggled to see the bigger picture.
“I kept telling him he had no image. I didn’t understand it, it didn’t connect, but he could rap his a** off,” he recalled.
Jones acknowledged the missed opportunity but questioned whether things would have worked out the same way if the artists had signed with him.
“Would it have been nice? Yeah, that might have been dope. But who knows, they might have not had the success that was given to them from the work they put in if it would have went through the channels that I had to offer.”
He also shared that his decision to pass on The Weeknd was influenced by a personal tragedy. He met the singer on the same day he lost a close friend, and the timing clouded his judgment.
Looking back, Jones appears to recognize the magnitude of those decisions, though he also seems to accept the circumstances that shaped them.
